He was born in Zakynthos in 1778, of Italian father and Greek mother and grew
up in Venice. He was an active member of the political and artistic movements
and wrote lyrical plays and novels, following the neo-classical style of his
era. Despite his living in Europe, he wrote: “I will not forget, ever, that
I was born by a Greek mother, I drank the milk of a Greek nanny and saw the first
beams of sunlight on the limpid and green Zakynthos, where the verses of Homer
and Theokritos that praised it, still echo”. He is considered one of the
classic Italian poets and his book “Dei sepolcri” (“Graves”) is one of
the most read collections of poems. He died in England in 1827 and his bones
lie in Firenze at the church of Santa Croce. |
